Grandparenting is one of the most rewarding roles we’ll ever have. In many cases, it’s almost like a prize we get for living this long and enduring the ups and downs of life.

How would you express the rewards of grandparenting?

One grandma shared her thoughts, and I think she captures it well for many of us. When we asked her about what kept her motivated as a grandparent, her response focused on simple things. She said it’s about being available to the grandkids and listening whenever they want to talk. She also said some of the most rewarding times were being there to watch their games and contests and performances; she just loves to watch her grandkids do their favorite activities.

I think she has it right. There’s nothing quite like the exhilaration of being part of our grandchildren’s lives, and usually it doesn’t take anything complicated or extravagant. We’re just there to interact with them, bond with them, help care for them, and watch how they act and think and relate—and experience joy along with it. There’s a sense of satisfaction in simply observing them and dreaming about what they could become in the future. There’s a magical connection between grandparents and grandkids, and we enjoy every minute.

What else is rewarding? For many, it’s fulfilling to give gifts to our grandkids that make them happy and meet their needs in meaningful ways. Of course there’s nothing quite like their hugs. And if we get to hear an occasional “I love you, Grandma,” that’s a feeling that stays with us in marvelous ways. There’s a lot to savor as a grandparent.

There’s also something deeper at work.

During these later years of life, our thoughts go more and more toward leaving a strong legacy. We want to know that our lives have made a difference and that we’ve helped future generations. Much like there are inherent rewards in working hard or completing a project, it’s satisfying to know that we’re investing our time and energy—and probably some money—to bless those we love the most. We’re able to play a key role in passing on our heritage, providing wisdom and showing unconditional love.

Grandparenting is enjoyable and rewarding for us, but it’s much bigger than that. When old and young generations unite, both benefit and thrive.
